By 1860, the customary sign for tobacconists was the Cigar Store Indian. The Indian was chosen because Native Americans introduced us to tobacco and cigars. It was the plains Indian that was usually used as the carver's model. The figure is typically dressed in buckskin, knee-length shirt, leggings, and moccasins with a feathered headdress and a kit of tobacco. It is not intended to represent any specific tribe. The originals were created by carvers, carpenters, artists, and shipbuilders. Most were carved from native New England white pine, though other woods were also used. Today, you can own a piece of this American folk art. These Indians are hand carved from solid mahogany. They are also hand painted and created with the same look and feel of the originals that were made over 150 years ago, with the same natural checks, cracks, chips, and worn paint.
